I'm having a problem using this program as I do not want to use my phone number. Is there a way to get around this?

Nobody will see your phone number. We add you using your username.

Another way around is to ask somebody to make an account for you.

I'm sorry but there are a million chat apps that can be used without giving up a personal phone number. If I need this particular one to join RS I guess I'm out

The whole community is using this app. If you're not ok with it u may end up alone, or at least until v3.0 comes out.

It's cool I've been alone since the game started. I was hoping to engage with a team and exchange ideas but I don't agree with the app you guys are using. It's my loss though you have a great guild here and some awesome people, I'm glad to have met you all and look forward to playing with/against you guys in the future

While I personally also dislike using phone number to get registered with that app, you have to understand that Shadow Era community has left IRC - other guilds are organizing popups and tournaments on telegram, and it will be increasingly harder to find anyone on IRC to play with. As IRC used to be only real time chat platform before Telegram became popular in SE community, I'm sad to see it go (especially as it had many advanced uses) but we have to use what benefits our members the most - and that is, all things considered, Telegram chat.
As for privacy, no one else except the app company will have access to your phone number - you can use username and no other user can see your number. This is pretty much standard procedure for mobile phone apps like Whatsapp, Viber, Skype whose companies also have access to your phone number, and it is not much different than activating google mail, hotmail/outlook and similar free e-mail providers. Considering that majority of Shadow Era players are mobile phone players, they like the convenience and ease of use of Telegram compared to IRC clients, and for them it's perfectly normal to use their phone number to register with some phone chatting app instead of, say, e-mail or IP address. It is unfortunate that community didn't want to continue using IRC as it served everyone well all these years, but we'll have to cope with the times.
